「doth」という単語。
doの三単元なのだが、その使われ方を見ると実に意味深い。
One swallow doth not a summer make.
ツバメが一羽来ただけでは夏にはならない。／早合点は禁物。
とか
The tree doth not withdraw its shade, even from the woodcutter.
木は、木こりにさえ、その陰を惜しまない。／あなたの家に敵がやってきても歓待しなさい。／敵を憎むな。◆ことわざ
とか。
さらにシェークスピアの言葉は美しい。
Women are as roses, whose fairflower being once displayed, doth fall that very hour.
「doth fall that very hour.」とは実に文学的な英語表現である。
国ごとに異なる言葉の問題は、実は克服できないかもしれないが、しかし人々の考えることには共通性があるものである。
言語とか、単語のニュアンスは一つ一つことなれど、「真意」がしっかりしていれば通ずるものだと思いたい。
今や一国の中でも意思の疎通は難しくなっている。
世代間でも、国際間でも「互いの言いたいこと」を正確に表現するスキルはこれからは特に必要だろう。
言語の使用技術、ではなく思考の整理術がより重要なのではないだろうか。
